In China, one can not call the name of a family member. For example, you can not call your dad his name. You can only mention his name to other people outside of your family. You can not call your elder sister or brother their name either. In Chinese, elder brother and younger brother are two different words. In English, uncle means the brother of your father or mother. But in Chinese, brothers of your father or mother are made very clear. If a person is an elder brother of your father, you should call him Bo Fu or Da Ye. If a person is a younger brother of your father, you should call him Shu Shu.

Grandmother means mother of father or mother. In Chinese mother of your father is called Nai Nai. Mother of your mother is called Lao Lao or Wai Po.
